Forest and birds

Due to its isolation, New Zealand has evolved bird and tree life that is unique to the country, some species just to parts of the North Island.

The forests are lush and green with tall podocarps, prehistoric tree ferns and epiphytes scattered amongst the verdant expanses. For nature photographers or those seeking to capture the serene beauty of the native forest, it’s a wonderful place full of flowers, insects, streams and waterfalls.

The mighty Kauri, one of the most ancient and massive trees in the world grows only in upper North Island. The Puriri Tree, also only found in the upper North Island, is a curative and sacred to the Maori.

The Coromandel also boasts an amazing collection of native birdlife. Cormorants, Gulls, Oyster Catchers, Gannets, Herons, Kingfishers and the elusive Dotterel which are surprisingly easy to spot if you know where to go. There are also Kiwi in the area – we may not get chance to photograph this iconic and nocturnal bird but if you are lucky you may hear their night call.

There maybe some trail walking required to access the forest locations.

"Thanks for the great time we had on the photography course. The things I learned have made a real difference to the results I am now getting with my camera. It's given me more confidence and belief that I can go out, find and compose the images I want, capture them and get the best out of them in post processing. I'm enjoying my photography more as a result. So thanks for making me a better photographer and I'm looking forward to another course to take me to the next level!"
